He has served in both the House and Senate since his first election in 1966.
Senator Ben Cardin announced that he will not be seeking reelection for the next term, beginning his transition into retirement. He first entered politics when he ran for and was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1966 while attending the University of Maryland to study law. He went on to serve as one of the youngest Speakers in the Maryland House in 1979.
He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1987 and was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. His political career has lasted for 56 years.
“I love Maryland,” stated Senator Cardin. “I love the people of Maryland and I love everything about our state from the beaches to the mountains, the cities and neighborhoods in between, and the rich history of the iconic Chesapeake Bay. It’s been the honor of my life to represent the people of Maryland.”
